In a major boost to youth employment, the Kenyan government has officially launched a new phase of the  Kazi Mtaani  program aimed at empowering thousands of young people through temporary work opportunities across the country. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development in collaboration with county governments, targets youths aged between 18 and 35 from informal settlements and vulnerable communities. This new rollout comes as part of the government's wider economic stimulus program and is expected to absorb tens of thousands of youth across the 47 counties. Tasks under the program include garbage collection, drainage unclogging, tree planting, cleaning of public spaces, bush clearing, and maintenance of public infrastructure such as markets and footpaths. KNUT Unveils Bold Push for 60% Salary Increase in 2025–2029 CBA

Image
In a major move that could redefine the future of teaching in Kenya, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has officially tabled a proposal demanding a  60% salary increase  for teachers under the upcoming  2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) . The proposal, which was submitted to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), seeks to address the rising cost of living, stagnated pay for teachers, and the growing burden of responsibilities brought about by the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). KNUT Secretary-General Collins Oyuu has stated that the union is committed to restoring the dignity and financial stability of teachers, many of whom have served for decades without significant salary adjustments. “This is not just a call for more money—it’s a call for fairness, recognition, and motivation,” he emphasized during a press conference in Nairobi. The union is pushing for the increment to be implemented  in phases over five years , beginning in July 2025,...

Fears of Retirement In July Push Some TSC Staff to Fake Disabilities Besides Prompting Alarm

Image
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is grappling with a growing concern following revelations that some of its employees are allegedly faking disabilities in a desperate attempt to extend their retirement period. This disturbing trend, reported just hours ago, has drawn sharp criticism from stakeholders in the education sector, with calls for stricter verification and disciplinary action against those found culpable. Sources within the Commission disclosed that there has been a noticeable rise in the number of employees presenting medical reports and disability certifications in recent months, many of which are now suspected to be falsified. The aim, according to insiders, is to delay the mandatory retirement age of 60 by claiming disability status, which under certain legal provisions can allow public servants to work until the age of 65. A confidential internal audit is said to have raised red flags, prompting the Commission to advise its human resource and legal departments to clo...

23,000 Teachers Set for Promotions In July and Pay Rise as Parliament Approves TSC Plan

Image
In a breakthrough for career progression and improved remuneration, over 23,000 teachers across Kenya are set for promotion and a corresponding pay rise. This follows the House Education Committee's recent approval of the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) request to proceed with the promotion and job-grade elevation of thousands of educators. The decision, which was made three weeks ago, has been received with enthusiasm across the teaching fraternity, with many hailing it as a long-overdue move to recognise and reward hardworking teachers. The TSC had earlier submitted a request to Parliament, seeking approval to promote teachers who had stagnated in the same job groups for years, despite meeting the necessary qualifications and experience. The House Education Committee, after reviewing the TSC’s submission, gave the green light to initiate the promotions, citing the need to motivate teachers and improve education standards in the country. According to sources from TSC, the prom...

Teachers Set for Early July As Salary will Improve Packages for Some Educators

Image
In a move that has brought relief to thousands of teachers across the country, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has confirmed plans to disburse June salaries earlier than usual. This decision comes shortly after the Cabinet Secretary read the national budget for the National Treasury, and it includes good news for certain categories of teachers who are set to benefit from improved salary packages. According to sources within the TSC, the early salary payment is intended to cushion teachers ahead of the end-of-month expenditures, especially considering that schools are currently in session and many teachers have been grappling with economic pressures. The early pay is expected to be credited into teachers’ bank accounts starting from the third week of June, instead of the typical end-of-month schedule. Of particular note is the improved package for some educators, a move that aligns with the government's broader plan to motivate and retain skilled personnel in the education sec...

Over 25,000 Teachers Promoted as TSC Waives Three-Year Rule to Fill Staffing Gaps in Schools

Image
In a major shake-up aimed at addressing acute staffing shortages in schools across the country, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has promoted over 25,000 teachers, marking one of the largest promotion exercises in recent years. Notably, this mass promotion exercise included 5,291 teachers who had not yet served the mandatory three-year period in their current job groups, as the Commission temporarily waived the requirement to speed up the filling of critical vacancies in schools. The move comes as schools continue to struggle with inadequate staffing, particularly in leadership and senior teaching positions. The TSC, after careful consultation with education stakeholders and in response to mounting pressure from teacher unions and Parliament, made the bold decision to overlook the traditional three-year service requirement in special cases where operational needs were deemed urgent. According to a statement released by the TSC, the promotions were based on merit, regional balance,...
